Vynfields Cottage Accommodation
Vynfields’ owners John Bell and Kaye McAulay are passionate about producing premium Pinot Noir and Riesling wines, handcrafted using traditional methods. Awards include a Gold medal at the Royal Easter Wine Show for our 2003 Pinot Noir and a Gold medal (and Best wine in the Riesling class) at the Bragato Wine Awards for our 2004 Classic Riesling.
We moved the historic Maranui homestead from Lyall Bay in Wellington, across the Rimutaka Hills, to Martinborough (in 5 pieces!). This was a homestead that Kaye had loved from a young age, and we have enjoyed restoring it. A profile of the homestead appears on our wine labels.
Vynfields’ vineyard is a boutique organic/biodynamic 5.3 hectare vineyard on the celebrated Martinborough Terraces. Vynfields is located on Omarere Road (off Puruatanga Road). The soils are free-draining with a thin layer of silt loam over old river gravels. The temperate climate has low rainfall, hot and dry summer days, and reliably dry autumns (with cool nights) which makes the Martinborough Terraces an ideal location for the cool climate grapes of Pinot Noir and Riesling.
The vineyard was originally planted in 1991 with 1 hectare of Riesling and 3 hectares of miscellaneous vines. John and Kaye replaced the latter by Martinborough proven Pinot Noir in 1998.
We are grateful to our celebrated winemakers Kai Schubert and Marion Deimling from Schubert Wines who make superb wine from our grapes.
